Tom and Colleen have led family trips to wilderness areas since 2005.  The trips started with local nature hikes for homeschool families and expanded to Isle Royale National Park where Tom already served as a guide for the Wolf Moose research project.  The first trip was 50 people in three groups and was a major success. The program was repeated again to Isle Royale and then expanded to include the Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan, Mammoth Cave National Park, New River Gorge recreation area and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.  Loonling Learning provides all support services for the trips, logistics, food, cooking equipment, concessionaire agreements, livery services, and then lead the programs and activities. All areas are known well or advance scouted prior to trips. For larger groups cooks accompany the teams.

A family program at Isle Royale National Park. Travel by tandem sea kayak and hike in pristine wilderness areas. Highlights include the Greenstone Ridge, historic fishery and lighthouse. Opportunity to see moose and other wildlife, and a visit to the summer home of the Wolf Moose research project where your guide is an experienced leader of citizen science expeditions.

The program starts and ends in Copper Harbor, Michigan. From there we travel across Lake Superior aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV. Camping will be at park service group sites. Plan on busy days and relaxed evenings. Your guides will coordinate meal planning and preparation with your assistance. Activity will include paddling, hiking short , visiting cultural sites and learning about the geology, ecology and history of this fortunate wilderness.
